What is a magneto and what does it do?

A magneto is a crucial component for igniting internal combustion engines, especially in boats. A magneto generates high-voltage electrical pulses needed for spark plugs to ignite the fuel-air mixture in the engine cylinders. Unlike battery-powered ignition systems, magnetos are self-contained and don’t rely on external power sources.

A magneto consists of a rotating magnet (or rotor) within a stationary coil (the stator). As the rotor spins, it induces electrical current in the coil, creating the necessary spark for combustion.
Magnetos are reliable, require minimal maintenance, and work well in marine environments. Some inboard engines also use magnetos, especially older models.
